New AI Feature Allows Users to Find Images Using Natural Language Prompts
Google Photos has begun rolling out its new AI-powered feature, “Ask Photos,” to a limited number of users in the US. Powered by Google’s Gemini AI, this feature enables users to search for specific images by simply typing natural language queries, rather than relying on traditional keyword-based searches. Initially announced during Google I/O in May, this functionality is now being made available to select Android users, with early access granted to those who joined the waitlist.
According to a report from Phone Arena, the feature replaces the Search tab in Google Photos, allowing users to request specific images stored in their Google cloud storage through conversational queries. Users can ask detailed or vague questions, with the AI utilizing information such as time stamps, location data, and facial recognition to deliver results. If the AI doesn’t find the correct image on the first try, follow-up queries can help refine the search.
Google emphasizes that user privacy is a priority. The company has clarified that any data processed through the “Ask Photos” feature, including search queries, will not be used for advertising purposes. Although human review of prompts is possible, it will occur only after accounts are anonymized.
The feature, available on both Android and iOS, uses AI to generate text descriptions for images, recognizing people, places, and events to enhance its search capabilities. Google Photos is set to redefine how users navigate their photo libraries, making it easier to find images through conversational search.
